What are Composite Door U Value Ratings?

So what are U Values? Why should we be interested?

The U Value measures how well an item keeps heat inside a building. The higher the U Value, the more heat will flow through, so a good U Value is a low one, keeping the heat in and the bills down!

In October 2010 the government introduced new U value regulations, stating that all doors sold and fitted in England and Wales must have a U Value of 1.8w/m2k or less. It is 1.6w/m2k in Scotland. The lower the U Value the more energy efficient your door will be.

At Abacas we are proud of the quality of our composite doors and supply a U Value certificate with every composite door. Each door has the U value calculated for that particular composite door combination giving you an exact value. Each certificate also carries independent verification from BRE (Building Research Establishment).

Key Free Locking System

The new key free locking system from Yale making your home more secure.

The door locks every time it closes, keeping you and your home secure. When you want to open the door all you need to do is turn the handle to unlock your door. When returning home you can use the remote key fob to unlock the door or enter your pin code

Not only will the lock's 80-decibel alarm sound if the handle detects vandalism or damage, but the system is an independently powered unit. So there are no wires, no complicated set up - and no need to call an electrician.

And even without power, you have two fail-safe entry methods; a 9V battery port and a mechanical cylinder.

This system is available with our composite doors watch the key free video for more information.

UPVC Doors with Side Panels

Side panels are available with all our UPVC doors with a variety of styles and glass choices available. Matching your new upvc door with a side panel makes the entrance to your home really stand out.

When measuring for a UPVC door with side panels measure the overall dimensions of both height and width in three places, left, middle and right of the overall door and side panel area.

UPVC French Doors

UPVC French doors not only enhance the look and feel of your home, there is no need for maintenance. No repainting or varnishing, they do not rust are weather-proof and extremely durable.

French doors allow you to open both doors allowing a much wider opening onto the garden or patio area. During the summer they allow you to let the fresh summer air in and in the winter allow more light in.

The security of upvc doors has improved greatly in the last few years with doors being fitted with multi point locking systems.

The energy efficiency of upvc French doors can vary, Pilkington K glass offers a thermal property that reduces the heat loss.

Fab & Fix has many years’ experience of developing ‘Security Conscious’Upvc Windows, upvc Door and Composite door Hardware to comply with constantly changing Building Regulations, as well as British and European Standards. Fab and Fix is a ‘Secured by Design’ licensed company with a substantial in-house product design and testing facilities and the Security Cylinder has been designed to meet the PAS 024 standard.

Composite Doors

Abacas composite doors come in seven external colours; red, green, blue, black, white, oak and now in dark wood. The internal colour of our doors is white to complement your upvc windows and window ledges.

The solid colours - red, green, blue, white and black - are pre-pigmented which means the colour is added during the manufacturing process. As the skins are applied, the colour goes on evenly.

The light oak finish is a hand-applied stained finish to give depth to the wood grain finish.

Abacas doors uses fully suited Yale hardware so whether you choose gold, chrome or black hardware to finish your door, you can be sure of a perfect match.
Everything from knockers and numbers to handles and hinges are designed as a complete suite.

Gold finishes often tarnish, but with the Hardex gold finish the gold has been toughened to withstand even the harshest of elements.

This is why a 10 year guarantee can be applied as we fully approve the testing and amount of design put into the doors.

All things like these have to be considered when buying a quality front door as it is another investment to your home that makes a big difference.

Upvc Back Door Security

Due to the ever increasing demand on life comes the misfortune of threats to you and your home.

Whilst every effort is made to make your possessions protected there is always someone or something trying to take them away from you.

Back doors at the home seem to be one of the most common points of entry to a secure property. That’s why all our doors at Abacas undertake a rigorous testing situation so we can try to make our doors more and more secure. The first thing we looked for was how to make the frames of our upvc back doors more robust. We achieved this by fully welding all joints and use top quality extrusions with steel reinforcing. The same process is also carried out on the door profiles itself and we use a 70mm profile to give this greater strength and durability. When it comes to panels, all the panels we supply are reinforced with a 28 mm compacted resin making it harder for the burglar to kick in. Not so long ago people found that doors with external removable beading gives anyone a key to their home which you will agree is not ideal. However, all our beadings are internal meaning there is no access to remove them from the outside. Glazing within the back doors are the same standards as all our doors and are Pilkington K Toughened, making the units very difficult to break without creating a disturbance. Here at Abacas we have created a manufacturing system which incorporates technology with design creating less manpower with more automated technology.

When people think of cheap upvc doors they think they will only last 2 minutes but not so in this case. Every design is detailed and approved to the highest British Standard and all the locking mechanisms are British standard Yale systems. Why not have functional and secure doors to the rear of your home not just the front as everyone knows a burglar does not want to be seen or heard?

UPVC Doors and Cat Flaps

Having received a number of requests for pre-installed cat flaps in our UPVC doors, we have now included these options on our half panel upvc back door. You can now choose your dog or cat flap and have it pre-installed in your new door.

All flaps are made by Staywell and there are currently two sizes of dog flap and three choices of cat flap available. The 4 way locking flap allows you to lock the flap, have the flap open, allow the cat in only or out only. The infra-red and magnetic cat flaps have collars for each cat which are coded to only allow cats with a particular collar to use the flap, the flaps also have the 4 way locking features.

Eco Friendly System

Taking care of the planet is something a lot of people talk about and most people want to be a part of. We at Abacas Doors put this into action by doing lots of little clever things to reduce this carbon footprint. Choosing a door from us will help support the future of this fragile planet, so take some action and order the right door from us.
Whether you want a Composite Door or a Upvc Door the manufacturing process allows us to create the frames, leaf and glazing systems all under the same roof within the Nottinghamshire area.
Due to the location of the outfits we have the door to door delivery system with no additional distribution points throughout the UK. When it comes down to eco support you will agree being central within the UK distribution miles are greatly reduced, which in turn saves on fuel. One journey means your door also arrives in perfect condition. Working with less waste also helps as we do supply high quality and stylish doors. Obtaining this standard requires us making door leafs from 3 set sizes and extrusions from 10 enviromentally friendly lengths.
Undergoing the reduction of energy loss we have put our composite doors and Upvc doors through their paces to test just how much heat these doors do deflect. The results for all this hard work has given back U values of 1.0 W/(m2.K) and Upvc values of 1.34. This means great news for the environment and also backs the new consumer guidelines which take effect in October 2010. Overall the outcome of these tests are to prove you can keep your energy bills down which in turn means you win all round.
In October the new Building Regulations cover the energy efficiency of all buildings and include windows and doors. New build homes and replacements/improvements to existing buildings are included and the new regulations are designed to meet greater energy efficiency requirements and lower carbon emissions.
Whether you are building a new home or replacing an existing door, the new door will have to meet strict energy efficiency requirements to comply with the regulations. Any door fitted on or after the 1st October 2010 must have a U-value of 1.8 or less. Failing to comply with these regulations will result in local sanctions to remove the installed equipment and be replaced with approved equipment.
What is a U-value? The U-value measures the rate at which heat is lost through the material. The lower the amount of heat is lost, the lower the energy wastage and the lower the U-value.

Alternatives to the traditional wooden doors

When requiring new doors there are many things you have to take into consideration. Some of these things being style, durability, life and also the budget. This is why we strive to give you the best alternative and the best quality available on the market at trade prices. Techniques over the last 25 years have progressed allowing manufacturing costs to be brought down to a level where the consumer gains all the benefits. We at Abacas Doors have tried to make ordering your next door an easy task by placing your order from the convenience of your sofa or work place allowing you time to make up your mind. We do not have pushy sales people as the products speak for themselves. Thanks to the internet you will not be put on the spot.
Due to the future climate and the economy more and more people are renovating and upgrading their own homes as this does have a lasting effect on value and security. One of the other benefits of upvc doors and composite doors are high security features because nobody wants to come home and find their worldly possessions gone. We at Abacas Doors have worked the cost down by up to 60% with using a stronger more durable profile within the upvc doors and have a bigger buying power with panels when bought in bulk.

GRP (composite) Doors Offers an Alternative to Steel, Wood and Upvc

GRP (composite) is a durable option for your home's exterior doors. It is damage resistant, doesn't attract termites or other organisms that damage conventional wood doors, and composite replicates the beauty of wood without requiring constant upkeep. GRP (composite) provides several times the insulation maintenance of wood due to not needing preserving; installing new GRP Composite doors can also be a part of your complete home energy efficiency plan.

Upvc Doors offer a further Alternative to Steel, Wood and GRP Composite

The upvc door has been around for more than 25 years and is still a very strong contender for the exterior door within the market. The durability and ease of maintenance has been proven over the years to be second to none.
The way manufacturing is now undertaken is a lot more automated with machinery cutting to length profiles, welding frames and joints which cuts down the manpower cost.
Panelled doors are a superb alternative as you can repair if not replace panels creating a different style without breaking the bank.

So if you're looking to save up to 60% off the RRP and want beautiful new front doors, whether they are composite or Upvc, then take a look through our extensive range online. If you are still not convinced and have any queries please don't hesitate to call.

20mm Flag Hinge Clearance

A 20mm Flag hinge clearance is a strip of upvc door rectangular section which fits between the wall and the hinge side of the door frame. This allows a greater adjustment on the hinges for any fitting discrepancies or wear.
